Isagenix Shake vs Keto

Is the Isagenix Isalean Shake keto friendly?

Often I'm asked how I use the Isagenix Isalean® Shake on my keto diet. Most ketogenic lifestylers will say the shake has too many carbs for their diet at 24 grams with 8 grams of fiber. Making it 16 net grams of carbohydrates.

The Macros of the Shake in My Experiment

Ingredients:

1 Scoop Isagenix Isalean® Shake (Salted Caramel)
1 Scoop Isagenix IsaPro (pure whey protein)
1 tbs Bulletproof Brain Octane Oil

I might agree that the Isagenix shake may not be able to be used during the initial phase of starting a keto diet when a person is becoming fat adapted. Yet after the initial fat-adaptation phase, generally about 14 to 30 days, the Isagenix shake fits nicely in the keto diet because the average amount of carbs most people can consume and stay in ketosis is 50 net grams. I've seen some athletes as high as 100 grams of carbs. I can consume about 70 grams per day and stay in ketosis.

What Most Keto People May Not Understand

I've encountered many on a keto diet who are attracted to the Isagenix shake because:

  1. Easy and Simple to Use
  2. Effective for Weight loss
  3. Helps Generate More Energy
  4. Curbs Cravings
  5. Affordable
  6. Fully Absorbable Vitamins and Minerals
  7. Build Lean Muscle
  8. Sleep Better at Night
  9. Opportunity to Earn Extra Money Sharing it with Family and Friends

Then upon looking at the food label say, "It has too many carbohydrates."

In my experience working with hundreds of keto individuals and athletes, most do not understand their own level of insulin resistance or sensitivity based on the number of carbohydrates they can consume daily and remain in ketosis (see my blog post on the right amount of carbs for you). Most simply do not test their level of ketosis as accurately as I've done in the video using a blood meter.

It took me about a year to be 100% fat adapted. I've been on a keto diet since April 1, 2017. The above video was recorded on September 7, 2019.

In the video, the "dawn effect", i.e., higher blood sugar in the early hours, raised my blood sugar to 82 and blood ketone level to 0.4 mmol. According to experts, a blood ketone level of 0.5 mmol is needed to satisfy fully the brains need for ketosis.

Because most people never test blood ketones they simply don't know how many carbohydrates grams they can tolerate. Urination strips or the breath meters simply are not very accurate.

MCT Oil (Brain Octane Oil)

MCT oil (medium-chain triglyceride) is immediately metabolized in the liver and creates blood ketones. When I became fat adapted after my first 30 days I could consume 5-8 tablespoons per day without any GI issues because my body had adapted to using fat as fuel vs carbohydrates. I use it a lot to raise my level of ketones and ketosis.

Results of Experiment

Clearly one-hour past consumption of the Isagenix shake, IsaPro, and MCT oil, raised my level of ketosis by raising blood ketones and lowering blood sugar.

Conclusion: For a person that is fat-adapted on a ketogenic or fasting-mimicking diet can use Isagenix Isalean® Shake and IsaPro combined with or without a healthy saturated fat like MCT, coconut oil or even grass-fed butter and can remain and/or increase ketosis level.

Certainly, the experiment is not scientific (n=1) but the results speak for themselves.
